Welfare Rights Paralegal (Lewisham Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Project)

Southwark Law Centre wish to recruit someone:

• To assist patients, families and carers in the Borough of Lewisham affected by Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia to access the welfare benefits they are entitled to.

• To ensure people affected are referred or signposted to other sources of legal support in areas such as housing and discrimination in employment.

The successful applicant will:

• Have at least 2 years recent, experience of providing advice and information to help people to access welfare benefits in a legal or advice setting

• Demonstrate an understanding of the issues facing people living with Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia, their family and carers.

• Have the ability to use online and written resources to research welfare benefits law

• Have the ability to explain complex legal issues in plain language

Southwark Law Centre has developed an agile working policy and staff can work partly from home and partly in the office in Peckham. There will also be some outreach at Lewisham hospital.

Terms and conditions include:

• 28 hours per week

• Salary range: NJC scale SP 9-13 £25,602-£27,498 pro-rata

• Initial 1-year contract with the possibility of extension

• 24 days holiday per year plus bank holidays
