Treasurer for Board of Trustees

Ealing Law centre is an award-winning Law Centre based at Hanwell Community Library. Its principal activity is the provision of legal advice and assistance to people in need -mainly, those living or working in the London Borough of Ealing. We have recently co-located with Hanwell Community Library and are entering an exciting stage of our development. Ealing Law Centre exists to tackle unmet legal need.

This is an exciting time to be joining our diverse Board of Trustees. After the pandemic our services are being reshaped, you will have the opportunity to contribute towards the shape of our future work and influence how we serve our community.

We are looking for a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. This is a voluntary role without remuneration. As a Board member with special responsibility for finance the Treasurer will work closely with our Director and support Ealing Law Centre’s service development.

We are specifically looking for a Trustee with expertise in finance and someone who understands grant funded organisations. Experience and knowledge of Law Centre’s work and service delivery under Legal Aid is desirable though not essential.

The ideal candidate will be based locally in the London Borough of Ealing, and have experience of financial management at a senior level, the ability to challenge and support decisions to ensure financial sustainability of the Law Centre, sound judgement, excellent interpersonal skills whilst having an ability to maintain independence.

Role summary

Ealing Law Centre Board is responsible for the overall governance, monitoring, and strategic direction of Ealing Law Centre. Governance is through the Board of Trustees and sub-committees as required.

You will be expected to attend our quarterly Board meetings, and to meet with the Ealing Law Centre Director at least monthly. We recommend you allocate 2 hours per Board meeting and 1 hour for each monthly meeting with the Director.

The Board works together with the Director to ensure that Ealing Law Centre meets its stated aims and objectives. It is responsible for ensuring that Ealing Law Centre meets the regulatory requirements of the Charity Commission, Office of Immigration Services Commission, Solicitors Regulation Authority, Legal Aid Agency, its grant funders, and all other legislative and regulatory requirements.

The Treasurer’s responsibilities include advising, guiding and reassuring the Board on all aspects of the financial management, reporting, control systems and chairing the Finance Committee. Trustees are responsible for helping set strategic direction, managing risk and scrutinising work, policies, and finances, working alongside our incredible staff team.

Ealing Law Centre trustees work closely together. Each new trustee on the Board is allocated a mentor. We can offer our Trustees training in house.
