Southwark Law Centre (SLC) is seeking to recruit a qualified IT Technician to support us through an office move, to ensure that we have the best systems in place for our needs and to prepare us for the move to Windows 11 and attaining Cyber Essentials Certification.
The successful candidate must have a thorough knowledge of computer software and hardware and a variety of internet applications, networks and operating systems. The successful candidate will be required to provide on premises support in our office location.
The ideal candidate will also have great troubleshooting abilities and the ability to explain issues clearly to members of staff with different levels of IT ability.
We need someone who is flexible and responsive, who can work on site as necessary.
We would like someone who can start as soon as possible.
Background information
SLC is a local charity providing legal advice for people who cannot afford to pay for this. Our current main office is in Peckham with a second smaller office in Lewisham. We are moving to new premises in Camberwell in January 2025. Our systems are mostly cloud based with on premises network printer/scanner. We have 40 members of staff, mostly solicitors and caseworkers. We have a contract for remote IT support but have identified a need for some face-to-face support, particularly with hardware problems and maintaining and upgrading our current asset list.
Key Responsibilities
Serving as IT lead within the organisation, working with our external IT support.
Installing, configuring and maintaining software and hardware components of computer and network systems
Diagnosing and troubleshooting software and hardware issues
Repairing and replacing damaged computer and network components
Ensuring the security of client and server computers by installing and upgrading antivirus and firewall software
Supporting people whenever they encounter challenges with computers and network devices
Maintaining and updating technical documentation regularly
Testing new hardware and software before full-scale installation
Provide training and guidance to users on how to operate new software and computer equipment
Maintain records/logs of repairs and fixes and maintenance schedule

Requirements and skills
Essential
Two to five years’ experience in IT operations or two-plus years of IT department experience.
In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Windows, service desk solutions.
Working knowledge of Client Management Systems in relevant industry
Working knowledge of Cloud architecture
In-depth knowledge of computer hardware systems and troubleshooting
Proven experience as IT Technician or relevant position
Good knowledge of SQL scripting, VPN, internet security and data privacy principles.
Practical experience with internet and network security protocols
Excellent communication skills
Flexible approach to providing support and ability to attend our office
Desirable
Degree in Information Technology, Information Systems or Computer Science or relevant field.
Foundation Degree, HND in Computer Networking and Security, Network Communications.
Certification as IT Technician (e.g. CompTIA A+, Microsoft Certified IT Professional)
Excellent technical aptitude including the ability to configure operating systems and network devices
Outstanding organisational and time-management skills
